Learning Permanent Weight Loss!

Most people who read my articles and e-books know me as a science guy who likes to quote studies and apply research to everyday problems such as weight loss, bodybuilding, and other health/fitness related topics. However, sometimes you have to step back from the science and look at the big picture to help bring people back into focus, so they can see the forest for the trees, so to speak.
For most people reading this article, finding an effective diet that works most of the time must seem as complicated as nuclear physics. It’s not, but there are a bewildering number of choices for diets out there. High fat or no fat? High carbohydrate or no carbohydrate? Low protein or high protein? To make matters worse, there are a million variations and combinations to the above diet scenarios to add to the confusion. It seems endless and causes many people to throw up their hands in frustration and give up. In this article I will attempt to change all that. More Info HERE

Will, this was one good article! Great stuff there – life-changing stuff, if people will only follow your advice.
I would like to add that the word “diet” can cause some confusion. As you say, it can mean a temporary change in eating habits in order to lose weight: “I’m no a diet.”
It can also mean the sum total of what one eats: “The diet of a rat includes many things we wouldn’t eat.”
Our diet, in the second sense, needs to reflect intelligent choices. It just so happens that intelligent choices are NOT always self-evident. Thanks to you for helping clear up some of the confusion!

    Will,
I very much appreciate all your comments. I may have missed it but do you have any thoughts about diminishing that almost irresistible urge to munch on something after dinner in the evening. I think this is where I add in enough calories to maintain that 10 lb. abdomenal roll that I would really love to lose (and keep off). Thank you, Paul

If its a role its closer to 30 lbs or more. One solution is to eat dinner later. Another is to exercise when you start feeling hungry. Cardio can help change your appetite. You can also munch on raw veggies, hard to eat too many calories with raw vegetables.

Many people spend years yo-yo dieting. If they would just follow the advice in this article, they would save themselves a lot of frustration and be a lot fitter and healthier. Far too many people buy into all of the supposed "quick fix" solutions to weight loss instead of making the lifestyle changes necessary to permanently lose weight.

Though the study was done on women, I would have to agree that the dichotomous thought approach is a big no-no and both sexes are guilty. That's why so many people are either on a diet or eating poorly. It's one reason I like the concept of cheat days. Not so much for any metabolic reason, but reinforcing the thought to eat healthy the vast majority of the time, but eating a bad meal or two shouldn't be an excuse to fall off the wagon entirely.

Sound advice. There seems to be a shortage of this by and large. My guess is that things get a little fuzzy when money is involved. Thanks Will.

As mentioned later on in the article, this type of common sense advice does not sell diet programs, fad books, etc. 🙂

dude what’s up with the coffee mug in your hand in all your videos?

      Will Brink 13 years ago

      Well, coffee usually! 🙂

      • Sushil 13 years ago

The only thing that remained constant in your video was the coffee mug … you not even for a single moment allowed it to move and neither did you drink it. If you would have held say a dumb-bell you could have got your mini work out already … or were you testing yourself, how long can I go on without drinking coffee in spite of it being in the hand! 🙂

First off, what a great article Will, you’ve done yourself and many many others a great service by thinking, talking and providing the bigger picture.
The points you raise are some that I have learned to use and take advantage of with clients, but I think that these are exactly the sort of points that should be taught to all health professionals right a the beginning of any course on nutrition. They are that important, after all if you can’t stick to a diet, it’s worthless.
One thing that’s worth pointing out is that the psychological factors seem to respond very effectively to NLP and Ericksonian Hypnosis. As someone who has trained as both PT and NLP Hypnotherapist I can vouch for the need to address the psychological issues, provide new resources for them and deal with the emotional issues around food, eating and diet. The problem I see with traditional psych approaches is that they just don’t work in the real world, as they don’t normally follow the way the brain seems to work. That, in my experience, is the difference between NLP approaches and others, but I’m also not dumb enough to say that there’s not others out there that don’t work!
I’d love to be able to recommend an online resource that gave people the answers and tools they need to get the psychological components right, but the only one I trust right now is the one I wrote myself. So I’m not going to post a link to it, but if someone wanted to find it via my name they could easily do so.
    Once again, thanks for this.
    Keep up the good work,
    George

Wonderful article. It makes you think about the entire journey, starting with learning how to eat a healthy diet and lifting weights to gain and keep lean body mass. And, ending with following that plan for the rest of your life.
